Student Feedback: In Their Own Words*
"The project allowed us to look beyond the text. By doing research about the author, the time period and a critical history we were able to see ideas in the text that we probably would not have seen before. The research acted as a bridge between the history we learned in class and the text itself, helping us better understand the time period as well as what the text meant then and now."
"This project has been interesting in learning about the period. I enjoyed learning about the history of the book."
"This research project was a useful supplement to the course material. I have gained new insight into research methods that I can use on future assignments. The project is not only applicable to my career goals, but will also help me as I progress in my studies. I hope to be a research professor one day, so I found this kind of work especially interesting and valuable. I enjoyed learning how to use databases more efficiently. It was also nice to watch the progress of the website."
"I think this project can be applied to many areas of study, but it is especially useful for my future academic goals and career goals. I plan on pursuing a graduate degree and the research methods I used in this project can be applied towards future research projects. In addition, the work that I have done on the website can be added to my resume."
"This project has helped me understand humanities research and the work that goes on in the graduate humanities area. It has helped me understand the book in context of its period and it has been fun!"
"It's been immensely helpful, specifically for the resources I've gained regarding research I've never used most of the databases available through the library here....Analyzing literature through a historical perspective now seems like a viable option for future projects."
"This project has been very useful in understanding the period because of the main site we used, ECCO, to get primary source documents into our projects. It was pretty cool that we got to witness manuscripts online in the original form and pressing from the date of publication that it had. The research methods were a bit limited, however; we were limited to ECCO and a certain time period. In terms of the humanities study in general, it was interesting to utilize research through primary source documents in conjunction with reading novels as to not limit the class to perhaps just discussion and the sort."
"The project brought light to the period through extensive research through scholarly sources. The utilization of databases is useful in all aspects of one's academic career. The project familiarized me with how the humanities departments obtain valuable information and the differences between reputable and false sources of information."
"I'm sure I'll be using ECCO and the other database websites in the future. Weebly is really easy to edit even if it's not pretty to look at. Doing the research in class has helped me think of ways to help create new programs and use the many resources at my disposal."
*Quotes from anonymous responses to questions about the project's value to humanities study and its applicability to career goals.
