Demystifying the Gothic: How The Mysteries of Udolpho Influences Northanger Abbey
Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey is popularized as a satire of Gothic literature. Indeed, vilifying over-dramatic characters such as Isabella and John Thorpe, emphasizing the ridiculous conclusions born from Catherine Morland's "horrid" fantasies, and creating a heroine admirable for her active agency, Northanger Abbey debunks Gothic archetypes. One novel that makes a pronounced appearance in Jane Austen's novel is The Mysteries of Udolpho by Anne Radcliffe. It is the first, and arguably the only, Gothic novel Catherine reads and introduces her all the characteristics of the Gothic that Jane Austen ultimately criticizes. As a result, Radcliffe's novel has a large influence on Northanger Abbey as the novel that Jane Austen is most apparently responding to.
